Paulo Ribeiro
Born in Lisbon. Worked as a dancer in several companies in Belgium and in France before becoming known as a choreographer.
His first performance concerning choreographic creation, took place in 1984 in Paris, in the company Stridanse, in which he collaborated as a co-founder and which he took to several contests in the mentioned city, obtaining in the same year, the Humour Award and in 1985 the 2nd Award of Contemporaneous Dan-ce, both in the Volinine contest.
In his return to Portugal, in 1988, he started collaborating with the Lisbon Dance Company and with Ballet Gulbenkian, for which he created Taquicárdia (Re-velation Award of the Newspaper “Sete”, in 1988) and Ad Vitam, respectively. With the solo Modo de Utilização, interpreted by himself, he comes to represent Portugal in the Europália 91 Festival, in Brussels.
His career as a choreographer expands in the international plan, from 1991 on, with the creation of works for renown companies, such as: Nederlands Dans Theater II (Encantados de servi-lo and Waiting for Volupia), Nederlands Dans Theater III (New Age); Grand Théâtre de Genève (Une Histoire de Passion); Cen-tre Chorégraphique de Nevers, Bourgogne (Le Cygne Renversé); Lorraine Ballet (White Feeling and Organic Beat). He still created for the Ballet Gulbenkian: Inquilinos, Quatro Árias de Ópera (in collaboration with Clara Andermatt, João Fiadeiro and Vera Mantero) and Comédia Off -1, White and Organic Beat, Or-ganic Cage, Organic Feeling.
In the meanwhile, Paulo Ribeiro has been rewarded in 1994, with Acarte Award / Maria Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão due to his work Dançar Cabo Verde, a commend of Lisbon 94 – European Capital of Culture, conjointly produced with Clara Andermatt.
In 1995, he founded the Paulo Ribeiro Company, for which he has already created the following choreographies: Sábado 2 (1995/2010); Rumor de Deuses (1996); Azul Esmeralda (1997); Memórias de Pedra - Tempo Caído (1998); Ao Vivo (1999); Comédia Off (2000); Tristes Europeus - Jouissez Sans Entraves (2001); Silicone Não (2003); As Memórias de um Sábado com Rumores de Azul (2005); Malgré Nous, Nous Étions Là (2006); Masculine (2007); Feminine (2008); Maiorca (2009); Paisagens - onde o negro é cor (2010); Jim (2012); Sem um tu não pode haver um eu (2013); Modo de Utilização (1990/2014); A Festa (da Insignificância) (2015) and most recently, Ceci n’est pas un film - Dueto para Maçã e Ovo (2016).
Working with his own company allowed him to develop more effectively his personal language as a choreographer. The work Rumor de Deuses was dis-tinguished, in 1996, with the awards: “Circulação Nacional”, attributed by the Instituto Português do Bailado e da Dança, and “Circulação Internacional”, at-tributed by the Centro Cultural de Courtrai, both concerning contest “Mudanças 96”. In 1999, the choreographer held “Prémio Almada” from Instituto Português das Artes do Espetáculo.
Paulo Ribeiro has been receiving other several relevant awards: “Prix d’Auteur”, in the V Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis (Fran-ce); “New Coreography Award”, attributed by Bonnie Bird Fund-Laban Centre (Great-Britain), “Prix d’Interpretation Collective”, attributed by ADAMI (France); “Prémio Bordalo” by Casa da Imprensa (Portugal, 2001).
In 2009, the choreographer held two more distinctions: in the 1º Portugal Dan-ce Awards, the “Coreógrafo Contemporâneo” award and in the “Dance Week Festival” (Croatia), he held “Prémio do Público”. The performance Pai-sagens – onde o negro é cor earned the award for him “Melhor Coreografia de 2010” from Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores.
Between 1996 and 1997, in accumulation with his work in the author company, Paulo Ribeiro was the commissioner of the cicle “Dancem” in Teatro Nacional S. João and between 1998 and 2003, was also the General and Programming Director of Teatro Viriato/ CRAE (Centro Regional das Artes do Espetáculo das Beiras) and Commissioner for Dance in Coimbra 2003 – European Culture Ca-pital.
In 2006, after the extinction of Ballet Gulbenkian which he directed between 2003 and 2005 and when he held due to his work the “Prémio Bordalo” from Casa da Imprensa Portuguesa (2005), he came back to Teatro Viriato, becoming again the General and Programming Director.
In 2008, he participated as a choreographer in the production Evil Machines, from Terry Jones for S. Luiz Teatro Municipal (Lisbon, Portugal). In 2010, Paulo Ribeiro choreogra-phed the performance Sombras from Ricardo Pais and in 2011, for the group Dançar com a Diferença (Madeira, Portugal), he created Desafinado and also a quartet for the collective performance with Companhia Nacional de Bailado, Uma Coi-sa em Forma de Assim followed by Du Don de Soi – a whole night performance about Andrei Tarkowsky – and Lídia in 2014. Paulo also worked in the cinema creating the choreography for La Valse from João Botelho.
The choreographer has been dedicated to education, through the orientation of several workshops in Portugal and in another countries where the company have been. He taught in Conservatório Nacional de Dança and Choreographic Composition subject in the master studies of Contemporary Choreographic Creation from Escola Superior de Dança (Lisbon, Portugal).
